Tour in Coba
Despite its smaller size and lesser renown compared to Chichen Itza, Coba is a Mayan city where numerous temples and ancient carvings will take you on a journey through time.
Coba (also spelled Koba) is a significant archaeological site located in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico, about 40 km west of the city of Tulum. Like Chichen Itza, Coba was an ancient Mayan city that played an important role in the history of the Mayan civilization. Here are some key points about Coba:
Coba and its History: Coba was one of the oldest and largest cities of the Mayan civilization. Its period of occupation extended from the 6th century to the 15th century. However, archaeological evidence suggests that the city may have been inhabited even earlier. Coba was an important commercial and political center, controlling a vast trading network in the region.
Unique Architecture of Coba: A distinctive feature of Coba is its extensive network of sacbeob (white roads), which were paved paths connecting different parts of the city. Some of these sacbeob extend for dozens of kilometers and lead to other nearby Mayan sites.
The Famous Nohoch Mul Pyramid: The main structure in Coba is the Nohoch Mul Pyramid, also known as “La Iglesia” in Spanish. Standing at approximately 42 meters in height, it is one of the tallest pyramids of the Mayan civilization in the Yucatan Peninsula. Visitors can climb to the top of the pyramid to enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding jungle.
The Must-Visit Cenotes in the Coba Region: Like many other Mayan sites, Coba also has cenotes, natural freshwater wells. These cenotes held great importance for the Mayans as they provided an essential source of water for daily life and were often considered sacred.
Coba and Tourist Visits: Coba is a less crowded site compared to Chichen Itza, making it an interesting option for travelers seeking a quieter and less crowded experience. Visitors can rent bicycles or tricycles to explore the extensive site as it covers a large area.
